Book Fight started way back in 2012 (yikes!) when Mike asked Tom if he had any interest in doing a podcast where they could talk honestly about books, writing, and the difficulties of navigating the literary world (Tom’s response: “Wait, what’s a podcast?”). Since then, the show has evolved into a much more professional enterprise, though one that strives to maintain the spirit of humor, friendship, and honesty with which it was started. For each episode, we invite a guest author to choose a book, essay, or short story that taught them something about writing—or about life!—and we use that as a jumping-off point for discussions that tend to be wide-ranging and unpredictable (except for each episode’s Lightning Round, which is 100% predictable).
