This one’s a Mike pick, a book he first read as a teenager while living in Charleston, South Carolina, home to The Citadel, which may or may not be the inspiration for the fictional military college at the heart of the novel (the book’s legal disclaimer says no, but our hearts say yes). Will The Lords of Discipline stand up to the scrutiny of Mike’s (slightly) more sophisticated adult reading brain? And what about Tom, who grew up on the rough and tumble streets of Philly, and wouldn’t know a live oak from a palmetto tree? Will the book’s portrayal of the South Carolina aristocracy convince him to never again travel south of the Mason-Dixon?
Talking points for this episode include: hazing, giving authority figures the bird, the whitest basketball game ever played, soap beatings, superfluous romantic entanglements, and Pat Conroy’s love of adjectives.
