This one’s a Tom pick, though we were both pretty into it. In fact, we liked this book so much it prompted a larger discussion about the purpose of novels, and the relationship between truth and art. Don’t worry, though: we found plenty of things to argue about. Like whether Tom’s generation is the worst, whether Mike’s rating system is an affront to mathematics, and whether we’re ready to take over for the NPR Car Talk guys.
We also took a detour into our bar-fight history. For once, Tom might actually have the moral high ground, since his story involves defending his wife’s honor, while Mike’s involves sleeping with some guy’s girlfriend. Lesser podcasters might shy away from stories that make them look bad, but as Akira Kurosawa famously said, the artist is one who never turns away.
If you’d like to read the essay we reference in the episode, “Two Paths for the Novel” (highly recommended), you can do so here. If you’d like to support a great indie bookstore (Powell’s) while throwing some coin our way, you can buy Zadie’s new book by clicking on this link.
Actually, if you click on that link–or any of the Powell’s links on our page–you can go ahead and buy anything, and a percentage of the purchase price will help fund the Book Fight podcast.
As always, you can listen to the episode through our site, by clicking on the little player thingy below, or you can download the mp3 file and do with it whatever you want. Or, find us in iTunes, where you can subscribe and make sure you never miss anything. We’re also available through Stitcher and Instacast, two podcast services we heartily recommend.
If you like the show, please consider leaving us a review in the iTunes store. And, more importantly, tell your book-loving friends! We’re just two dudes who love books and think they should be talked about honestly, without ulterior motives or hidden agendas. We want the show to be the beginning of a conversation. You can leave comments here, email us at bookfightpod(at)gmail(dot)com, click on the ‘Fight Back’ tab above, or follow us on Twitter, @Book_Fight.
Thanks for listening!
